October 16th, 2013 marked the fifth anniversary of a joint annual forum presented by Hitachi, Ltd., the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Brookings Institution. This year’s forum was centered on the ongoing shale gas boom and how it is shaping energy security and environmental issues across the world. The forum was held at AAAS headquarters in Washington, DC and featured a keynote presentation from the Director of the Energy Security Initiative at Brookings, Dr. Charles Ebinger. Two panel discussions on subtopics related to global shale gas development followed: one exploring the geopolitics of global energy supply, and the other looking at meeting environmental challenges through technology and governance.
