Hitachi International Affairs Fellowship in Japan

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) International Affairs Fellowship (IAF) in Japan, sponsored by Hitachi, Ltd. was established in 1997 at the initiative of CFR and Hitachi to strengthen the mutual understanding and cooperation between the United States and Japan, and in particular to enhance American understanding of Japan.

Each year, CFR awards up to five fellowships to U.S. mid-career professionals with outstanding qualifications and project proposals. Candidates are drawn from academia, business, government, media, NGOs, and think tanks, and must exhibit strong interest in U.S.-Japan relations. The program is intended primarily for those without substantial prior experience in Japan, and knowledge of the Japanese language is not a requirement.

IAFs in Japan spend between three and twelve months in Japan working at host institutions where they pursue research and other professional activities. Recent areas of work have included foreign affairs, economy, defense, and security, and recent placements have been made at the Japan Institute of International Affairs, National Institute for Defense Studies, and Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Learn how Hitachi in collaboration with CFR provides an opportunity to the rising generations of U.S. leaders through its IAF in Japan.
